Look for the Label

A new initiative, the Safety Labeling Program, helps companies present reliable, science-based safety information on herbal products. The American Botanical Council (ABC), an independent third party, reviews and evaluates the current literature addressing safety aspects of selected herbs and creates Safety Information Sheets (SIS). The SIS is used to create label text, which will be reviewed by ABC and may include the ABC logo. All or part of the information may be placed on the label and/or the company's website with a link from the label. The resulting label guidelines and warnings are designed to increase responsible use of herbal products by consumers, helping to reduce the potential for adverse reactions and/or drug interactions.
