For the Poorest

July 01, 2005

Plumpy'nut, a packaged peanut butter fortified with vitamins, minerals and sugar, is saving the lives of malnourished children in Africa, reports an April 12, 2005 article in the Wall Street Journal. Manufactured by the French company Nutriset SAS (www.nutriset.fr), the product does not require the addition of hard-to-obtain clean water and due to its base, does not serve as a breeding ground for bacteria. The product is purchased by relief agencies for about 35 cents a 100g packet. Nutriset has shipped over 300 metric tons to war-torn Darfur alone.
