FDA Expands Heart Healthy Claim

Cargill Health & Food Technologies helped trigger an FDA action on February 14 that expands the use of the phytosterol heart-health claim to a broader range of foods and beverages, when formulated with 0.65g phytosterol esters or 0.4g free phytosterols per serving.

This is good news for the company's CoroWise phytosterols line. Plant sterols have been found effective in lowering elevated cholesterol when incorporated into low-fat foods, demonstrating an 8% to 15% reduction in LDL cholesterol with no reported adverse health effects.
