Chromium and Aging

Normal consequences of aging may not be so normal after all, a new area of research suggests. Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease may not be connected with age so much as with poor diet, particularly a deficiency of chromium.

Chromium, known to enhance insulin activity and to control glucose levels, has been shown to have positive effects on risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Chromium levels decrease with age, and most Americans do not consume adequate amounts. Supplements can be a safe, effective way to ensure optimal intake, and a number of studies have shown that chromium picolinate can enhance insulin function.
