Asking for Astaxanthin

By Julia Gallo-Torres
Antioxidants possess almost mystical powers, and scientists continue to learn about their role in scavenging and quenching free radicals and reactive oxygen species, preventing disease.

Astaxanthin, an antioxidant, is the main carotenoid found in algae and sea life such as salmon, trout and shrimp. Studies show its ability to protect against UV photo oxidation and DNA damage; stimulate the immune system by increasing T and B-cell production; and help inhibit formation of oxidized LDL, which is associated with plaque formation in blood vessels. It also reduces inflammation, and may prevent the formation or production of tumors.

Algatechnologies Ltd. has a plant in Kibbutz Ketura in the Arava desert, in Israel, and has taken advantage of the desert sun to farm the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis for the industrial production of astaxanthin. The company cultivates the microalgae in a closed system, providing complete protection from environmental contaminants. Algatechnologies is the biotechnology company responsible for the science behind AstaPureâ„¢ natural astaxanthin. The consistent, kosher ingredient is offered in several forms, including two new products: AstaPure 2.0% astaxanthin vegetable beadlets and AstaPure 0.4% astaxanthin NSSL, a transparent, viscous, concentrated oil that consists of 0.4% natural astaxanthin. It can be incorporated into liquid dietary supplements and beverages. AstaPure is also available as a dry biomass containing 3.5%-4.0% astaxanthin, as a 10% standardized oleoresin, beadlets and water-dispersible beadlets.

Astaxanthin is recognized as being about 500 times more effective than vitamin E, making it significantly more potent than other carotenoids such as lutein, lycopene and beta carotene. Because of its special ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, research has suggested it has a role in protecting the central nervous system, and can protect against cataracts. The ingredient has had huge interest in Japan and is generating a growing interest in Europe and U.S. markets as well. Algatechnologies' patented production process allows it to offer astaxanthin at competitive prices. NS
